If you love steel and glass buildings or a great minimalistic bob hair cut, then you have to love Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the maestro of modernism. He perfected the art of minimalism, gave us buildings like Crown Hall, Lakeshore Drive Apartments and Farnsworth House, he also made famous aphorisms that we never tire of – ‘Less is More’ and ‘God is in the Details‘. Every single work of his stayed true to these till the very end.
So Google made sure that none of us forgot his 126th birthday by dedicating a nice doodle! Featured below is the Google Doodle of what else… Crown Hall, Mies’s flagship project at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. Not only did he design multiple buildings at IIT but he also planned the campus and taught Architecture there. He worked mostly in and around Chicago after immigrating from Germany and closing of the Bauhaus school there.
Taking inspiration from Google, I am dedicating my next couple of blogs to Mies. Check back for more pictures of his greatest works from Chicago in the next couple of days. After all, it would be a tribute from one honorary Chicagoan to another! Meanwhile, if you want to know more check out these really cool links:
